The mongkhon comes off before the bell. The pra jiad stay on. These cloth bands on one or both upper arms began as strips torn from a family member's clothing, worn for luck and protection, and today they are usually supplied by the camp, which is a less romantic origin but the same idea.
Some gyms outside Thailand use the colour of the pra jiad as a grading system, like belts. That is a modern invention and no part of the Thai tradition, where the band is a charm, not a rank.
