Ippon

一本 · ip-pon

Ippon is the goal of every judo exchange and the reason judo scoring differs from wrestling or BJJ: one decisive action wins outright. The referee signals it with a straight arm raised above the head. If a throw is missing one of the four criteria (back, speed, force, control), it scores waza-ari, and two waza-ari add up to ippon under current International Judo Federation rules.
